Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in a lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Reinhold Niebuhr
Meditation: What if we are not being cured? What if our problems do not go away in our lifetime? What if that which burdens us will not be completely lifted? Shouldn’t we despair? Shouldn’t we give up? What if our dreams do not come to fruition as we hoped? What if we cannot complete that which we began and fought for so long? Shouldn’t we throw in the towel? Shouldn’t we blame ourselves for being so foolish to believe we could do it? Nothing worthy and lasting can be achieved in a lifetime. At the end of our life, we will remain incomplete, we will be unfinished. Our dreams might not all have become a reality. However, as incomplete and unfinished as we are, we are saved by our hope that there is a loving God who completely loves us. A God who accepts us as we are, and who does not judge us by how we could have been… God has a much bigger view of things. Sometimes our pains and struggles will only be healed in future generations. Sometimes the injustices that happened to us will only be redeemed in our children’s life story. Our incompleteness will be God’s opportunity to ask us at the end of our life: “Do you want to get well?” And all we need to say is “Yes”. Hope will be our saving Grace.
Prayer: God, You heal us even when cure is not possible. You mend our hearts, even though they were broken many times. When we feel despair as other people define hope as the fulfillment of dreams, and our dreams are only nightmares… then God, come to us. You know how long we have waited. You take our incomplete and scattered lives in Your hands. In Your presence we will be healed. Amen
