The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Meditation: Today my twin girls graduated from Middle school. Some children had an all A average. We were proud that both our girls have A’s and B’s. Yes, education is important and grades are, too. However, the past three years of middle school were mainly about the blossoming “Wisdom of knowing self”. As a therapist, pastor and educator I believe that “the Wisdom of knowing self” is even more important than getting all A’s. My girls have made first discoveries about Wisdom when they learned how they study best, when they articulated important values they hold, when dealing with physical changes, when learning about preferences and dislikes, when learning about managing their feelings and about choosing and having relationships outside of family. A’s are great. But Wisdom is even better.
Prayer: God of Wisdom, you want to strengthen my girls’ mind and help them to think intensely and critically. And at the same time you want to give them Wisdom as it comes to their heart, their character, their ways of relating and their emotional intelligence. Thank you that our girls have tangibly and visibly grown in all these areas. We pray that you protect them and watch over them. May they always strive for Wisdom and not just knowledge. Fill them with Your Wisdom so that they not just know things, but that they better and more fully understand You, themselves and others. And we are grateful. Amen
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get understanding. Proverbs 4:6-7
