The Two Kinds of Power

“Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.” Mahatma Ghandi

Meditation: In a time where the world experiences America suddenly as a power using and fear inducing entity, those who believe in love, mutual respect and a win-win approach feel overwhelmed, helpless and distraught. How could this kind of power “trump” the power of love? How could the global concerns where we are all neighbors be suddenly overshadowed by a narcissistic notion of “only me”? How can people who speak up against such a model of power feel so threatened by those that now grip the steering wheel?Germany has experienced the takeover of such model of power before. Fear and sadness grips our hearts. The suffering of many is being awaited, rendering those who have been traumatized before feel powerless and even depressed. What shall we do?

Love wherever you can! Love those around you, your family, your neighbor, the person meeting you on the street. Reach out in random acts of kindness have a huge power! Love in the midst of the messages of hate. Believe that the God who is love will empower you, every day, to love and to speak your truth against fear, hatred and narcissistic power in small and in large.

Prayer: Fear wants to grip our hearts. Depression and trauma try to grip our souls. God of love. Reach in with your words today, as the words of power that bring fear and oppression are the ones that dominate. Empower us as we feel stunt, paralyzed and weak. Let us stand on your power that is love. Amen

Philippians 4:13 I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.
